Lexus is developing a small hybrid engine to allow its new GS luxury car to compete with its economical European rivals.
Speaking to Auto Express Koji Sato, deputy chief engineer, product planning said: “We are working on a number of solutions to offer low CO2 emissions and these include a small hybrid.”
The new GS launches in the UK in the summer but the only models will be a range topping GS450h with a 338bhp 3.5-litre V6 hybrid and an entry-level GS250 with a 206bhp 2.5-litre V6.

Volvo is taking a new approach to hybrid technology. First tests of a flywheel system, similar to the KERS used in F1, will take place in the second half of 2011 and could pave the way for more cost-effective hybrid cars in the future.

Honda is hotting up its hybrid CR-Z. The firm has confirmed that its MUGEN tuned CR-Z will make its debut at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed in July.
Like the standard CR-Z, the MUGEN model will be powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine, boosted by Honda’s Integrated Motor Assist hybrid system. However, power to the engine will be upped thanks to improvements to the induction, ECU and exhaust, while the power of the hybrid motor will also be increased.
